UMIDIGI A7S, a fairly solid low-end and with an infrared thermometer

UMIDIGI is a Chinese manufacturer with which we are already familiar, it has quite a few entry-level and mid-range smartphones on the market. An example of the above mentioned is the  UMIDIGI F1 Play , which resonates quite well in the budget mid-range. However, this time we redirect our attention to its latest launch for the low range: the UMIDIGI A7S , an affordable terminal full of competent specifications in its respective market sector, notably a 6.53-inch HD screen, 4,150mAh battery, 32GB. internal storage, 13MP quad camera and Android 10 GO edition as the operating system.

As if that were not enough, this peculiar terminal has an even more peculiar characteristic, and that is an infrared thermometer. Be that as it may, its price of less than 100 euros makes it an excellent bet within its respective range, so it is worth taking a look.

Unibody design  : UMIDIGI A7S, a fairly solid low-end and with an infrared thermometer

For a cheap terminal, the UMIDIGI A7S looks pretty good, not only does it sport a  3D unibody design  with rounded edges, but it also has a textured coating that protects the back cover from fingerprints and grease stains.

UMIDIGI A7S - Design

The body is relatively compact, we are talking about dimensions of 164 x 77.14 x 9.45 mm along with a weight of 195 grams.

On the back it houses a black rectangular module that encompasses the four rear cameras of this device, while on the right edge the Power button is positioned   next to the volume keys. As you can see, the UMIDIGI A7S has an additional button on the left side , which can be configured as a shortcut to different functions, such as the aforementioned thermometer, as well as to make emergency calls, activate the push to talk, take a screenshot, turn on the flashlight or launch a particular app.

UMIDIGI A7S - Configurable button

Before moving on to the next section, it should be noted that the A7S uses a reversible USB Type-C port and does not sacrifice the 3.5mm audio jack.

Screen

Moving to the front, the smartphone outlines a respectable 6.53-inch LCD screen with HD + resolution of 1,600 x 720 pixels and very slim bezels. As you can guess, it has a 20: 9 aspect ratio and a   drop-shaped notch for the front camera. Density is not a big deal, we are talking about 269 ppi, but at least the screen-to-body ratio is well achieved (92.7%), which is why the UMIDIGI A7S passes as a higher category terminal with the naked eye.

Hardware and Features

Getting into the technical details, the UMIDIGI A7S is powered by a   low-end MediaTek SoC , specifically the MT6737 , which only consists of four   1.25Ghz Cortex A53 cores and a Mali-T720-MP1 GPU.

Therefore, it is a combination that meets the minimum and nothing more; even so, its chip is appropriate for day-to-day tasks and apps, especially when taking into account the operating system with which it is shipped, Android 10 Go Edition . This version of Android is not only recent and regularly patched, it is also optimized to work great on resource-poor devices.

Also, the UMIDIGI A7S is accompanied by 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage ; again, it is what we can expect from this range, so we cannot fault it. It should be noted that it is possible to expand the internal memory up to 128GB through a Micro-SD card, for which there is a dedicated slot in the SIM tray (2 Nano-SIM).

Moving on to the battery issue, we find a 4,150mAh unit without fast charging . According to the manufacturer, it should guarantee a duration of one day or more.

Finally, 4G LTE,  dual band Wi- Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS are the connectivity options present in this mobile, nothing to write home about .

Infrared cameras and lens

In the photographic realm, the UMIDIGI A7S has a quad camera according to the manufacturer’s advertising, but it is actually triple, since one of the sensors serves another purpose. Going into details, the configuration is headed by a 13MP camera with f / 1.8 aperture . As a secondary camera, it has an 8MP ultra-wide sensor with a 120-degree field of view and a 2MP depth camera on the back.

UMIDIGI A7S - Cameras

The fourth and last sensor is an infrared lens , but its function is not to take photos, but to measure body temperature. Obviously this is a function that responds to the current health situation in the world, although it may lack practical purposes for many users. Be that as it may, UMIDIGI warns that the mobile is not designed to replace a dedicated medical device, only to serve as a reference, which honestly puts us to doubt the usefulness of this function.

In a different vein, the selfie camera   is about 8MP and supports beauty functions, as well as is compatible with 2D facial recognition, this being the only means of quick unlocking of the mobile, since it lacks a fingerprint reader.
