Doro 8050, Simplified Smartphone for Seniors

A simplified smartphone may sound like a contradiction, but that’s exactly what the Doro 8050 aspires to be . In this sense, Doro is a mobile manufacturer focused on a fairly specific audience, and that audience is the elderly, those who – understandably – find it difficult to use new technologies. We recently covered the  Doro 6620 , but when we did we realized that it is not a smart smartphone, but a basic one, and it falls short for many users.

On the other hand, the Doro 8050 is a full-fledged smartphone, so it can be perfect for older users who are more versed in technology, as it is designed to respond to the needs of their age. , but without sacrificing the flexibility of a modern Android mobile. It offers an intuitive interface with large letters / icons, an emergency button that alerts family members, and fairly clear sound.

Design and display  : Doro 8050, Simplified Smartphone for Seniors

The Doro 8050 looks like a very conventional low-end terminal, that is until we look at the SOS button on its back, which reveals the true nature of this device. Beyond this detail, it is an ordinary mobile with size dimensions of 152.9 x 70.8 x 9.15 mm and a weight of 165 grams.

Doro 8050 - Design

The terminal denotes a non-impressive plastic construction, and it also has a physical start button on the chin.

For its part, the screen has a diagonal of 5.4 inches , so it is not very large or very small, achieving a perfect balance that discards those complaints that today’s mobiles are very large, but at the same time allows you to see everything clearly. The same outlines HD + resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels and lacks notches or perforations.

Hardware and Features

Before starting, it should be noted that the Doro 8050 is a very basic mobile from head to toe, the optimizations to make it friendly with older adults come in its design, interface and operating system, so the hardware is not a big deal.

With that said, the device is powered by a Qualcomm QM215 chip , a basic 1.3Ghz 4-core processor, which is accompanied by an undisclosed figure of RAM (probably 1GB or 2GB at most) and 16GB of internal storage ( expandable up to 128GB via Micro-SD).

The battery that powers it has a capacity of 3,000mAh and promises up to 13 hours of call duration. More interesting is the presence of a reversible USB Type-C port, saving more than one the typical stumble of trying to connect the charger backwards.

In the photographic section there is not much to say; there is a 13MP camera with flash on the back, and a front camera whose resolution and brand are unknown, so it does not stand out for its photographic capabilities either.

Finally, the connectivity options are the usual ones in the low range: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, 4G LTE and GPS.

A mobile designed for the elderly

This mobile runs Android 9 as the operating system , but the interface has been extensively modified by the manufacturer to ensure that the font size and icons of the apps are visible to the elderly with vision problems. In the same way, simplifications have been made in the menus and application drawer to avoid tangles and guarantee that the user does not have problems when it comes to finding what they are looking for. And since it is Android, applications can be installed normally from the Play Store.

Interface with large icons

The Doro 8050 makes sure to give the user a quick and easy way to contact loved ones or caregivers in the event of an emergency. The aforementioned SOS button alerts previously designated “assistants” in the Response by  Doro app  via SMS that the user needs help. It can also be configured to include the location in the message or to call at once using speakerphone mode. On top of that, the app allows attendees to configure the Doro 8050 remotely.

It is worth mentioning that the sound section has been reinforced to allow the user to hear everything loud and clear.

Who is the Doro 8050 for?

Well, as we indicated at the beginning, it is an ideal mobile for older adults who find it difficult to read the text on the screen of a mobile or listen to the sounds of notifications. The fact that it is intelligent and has the Android ecosystem should not distract us from the fact that it is a product designed for a specific audience with specific needs; since if we judge it as a common terminal it will disappoint us a lot, since for what it costs we can get smartphones with technical specifications much higher than those of the Doro 8050.

So remember, we are paying a Plus to know that our grandparents or parents will not have complications when using the mobile and that, in case of any eventuality, they only have to press a button and they will already be in contact with us.
