Foliage in Italy: living autumn intensely

Autumn is a particular season and its colors are those of the leaves: yellow, red and shades of brown with patches of green.

And the leaves that change and then fall, in some places in particular, can be an unmissable spectacle, especially for children.

Learning the changing seasons on the field, looking and touching the leaves, is an experience that certainly facilitates learning and awakens all the senses. The little ones can “learn autumn” by touching, smelling and observing this somewhat magical season that accompanies us all towards the return to light, the winter solstice.

So here are some places in the beautiful country, where autumn leaves give their best, places where it is worth planning a trip or a weekend:

    • The area definitely richer in landscapes with spectacular foliage, is that of the North-East from the Val di Funes to the Alto Piano di Prato Piazza (Alto Adige), passing through Cortina D’Ampezzo (Veneto) and Cansiglio (straddling Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia).
    • Natural parks such as Gran Paradiso and Mont Avic (Valle d’Aosta) are also family friendly.
    • Also noteworthy are the walks in city parks such as Villa Borghese or Villa Ada in Rome, or the Valentino park in Turin.
    • The foliage is also spectacular in the South. Umbra Forest (Puglia), Sila (Calabria), Verrutoli Forest (Basilicata).

These are just some of the locations that offer routes that are easy to tackle as a family and in many cases it is possible to participate in guided tours organized on site, to learn something more together.

    Let’s play with the leaves

Collecting leaves of different colors, observing them, comparing their shapes, is an activity that always has great success with children of all ages. And then after a trip to one of the most beautiful places in the foliage, the loot will surely be rich.

To create a memory, you can make a book of leaves together with your children. Here are the “ingredients”:

    • Spiral notebook . The basis for our book.
    • Vinyl glue . To glue the leaves each to its page.
    • Brushes . In order to spread the glue evenly.
    • Colored markers . To create a card for each leaf and maybe make a drawing of the tree it fell from.
