If you thought that Huawei’s flagship for 2020 was the Huawei P40 Pro , you are not far off the mark, but you have not been completely right either. Within the P40 family, the Chinese manufacturer has launched its true Godzilla this July, the Huawei P40 Pro + , a smartphone that has already passed through my hands and from which I have been able to take advantage of enough for almost a month that I have had with me.
If you are thinking of buying it or giving it away, here are my opinions so that you get your purchase right and you can know thanks to this analysis if it is the smartphone you are looking for or not.
Huawei P40 Pro + box content: Huawei P40 Pro +, analysis of Huawei’s true top of the range in 2020
Premium smartphones are asked for that “plus” that makes us feel special from the moment the box reaches our hands, right? In this case, the Huawei P40 Pro Plus uses the same packaging design as in any other of its products, which helps to keep a certain hegemony but, in my humble opinion, I think it does not benefit its more premium ranges.
Opening the classic white Huawei box we find the smartphone first. When you take it, that feeling of “more of the same” changes and the Huawei P40 Pro + is the first smartphone that has managed to excite me in terms of design so far in 2020 . I will go over this point later.
Below it are the SIM spike, the USB to USB C cable, a USB C headset, and the SuperCharge 40W wall adapter . There is no trace of the manuals or a case, but I do not know if the final version brings it (this is a unit for the press), since the Huawei P40 Pro does include in its box a simple transparent silicone case that is not great thing but it does a lot of work, especially in the first days.

Except for this, all other features are identical on both models .
Design: love of ceramics at first sight
The ceramic back on the P40 Pro Plus is a success. It is available in black or white , in my case I have been able to try white and it has an absolutely beautiful lacquered finish. Best of all: fingerprints are not marked and it has an elegant shine that makes it a really beautiful terminal. It gets dirty, like all of them, but much less than the glass finish. It is very pleasant to the touch and although it is still somewhat slippery, it is not as slippery as the P40 Pro.
The frames, also made of ceramic, arrive this time in silver, while the front is all glass. The infinite curved screen stands out, with the notch embedded in the upper left corner and the rounded edges of the edges. The camera module is quite prominent, but I liked the result. On the right side are the volume buttons and the power button, while at the bottom there is the slot for the SIM, the USB C port, the microphone and the speaker.
A small drawback that Huawei has not fixed for several generations is that the microphone is next to the SIM hole and it is very easy to click on it by mistake.
Screen and performance to match
The screen is another element of this smartphone that makes it really beautiful. But, beyond the design, the truth is that it offers a quality that has left me more than satisfied. As I mentioned in the previous point, it has a perforated notch on the screen , which houses the double front camera. The curvature of the edges favors the sensation of an immersive screen and I have not had problems with phantom keystrokes on the sides , which did happen to me on occasion with the Samsung Galaxy S10 + .
The size is 6.58 inches, but thanks to the absence of frames there is no awkward final size. Its resolution on paper is meager (2,640 x 1,200 pixels), but in practice I am more than satisfied with the quality of the panel. It looks great both indoors and outdoors, I have no blind spots and the vividness of the color is fantastic. Also, the brightness level is very high if you set it to the maximum, so you will not have problems with this either. I admit that, personally, I tend to like somewhat saturated colors and this terminal can be wrong, but don’t worry, because in the settings you can change the color tone. Finally I also highlight as a very good point that it has a refresh rate of 90 Hz, you notice the fluidity in the transitions and when playing titles like PUBG Mobile.
And speaking of PUBG Mobile, if you read me with some frequency you will know that this is the game that I usually use to assess the performance of mobile devices. On this occasion, the data obtained is identical to that of the P40 Pro, since the processor used and the RAM are the same ( Kirin 990 and 8 GB ).
As for the temperature, something that usually worries me in summer since I live in a very hot place, I have not had heat problems and I have noticed that, at least in the sensations at hand, the ceramic seems to insulate quite well. The hardware lives up to expectations.
Sound, software, security, connectivity and battery
Estos cinco apartados son idénticos al Huawei P40 Pro, por lo que te invito a leer mi análisis sobre este otro smartphone donde detallo en profundidad cada apartado.
I just want to highlight something that has changed since I tried the P40 Pro dry. And it is the arrival of Petal Search . It is the search engine that, thanks to the Find Apps widget , makes the user experience with this terminal much easier. It is true that software is still something that, for certain users less knowledgeable in the matter, can choke on it, especially because certain apps still do not work as they should. But I have to say that Huawei Mobile Services have improved a lot in this year that has passed since the Trump veto arrived and little by little the experience is becoming more complete. Is it perfect? No, I am not going to deceive you nor do I intend to. I want you to know exactly what you are buying.
I’ll briefly explain how Petal Search works. What this engine does is search the apps all over the internet. The results are ordered by suitability. If you are looking for an application that is in the AppGallery (Huawei’s own app store), it will first show you this results, if not, it will take you to a third-party link that will install the apk. It makes the process much easier and avoids you looking for it manually. Anyway, let me recommend a third option: Aurora Store , quite reliable and where I have found around 85% of the apps that I use the most.
Huawei P40 Pro + camera: zoom to 100x and finally a good portrait
I leave for last the point at which Huawei stands out the most since it first included a double camera in a smartphone (I’m talking about the Huawei P9). At that time, the company has continued to improve, well held by Leica’s hand, its photographic section and without a doubt it is possibly the best option on the market for those who want the best camera, along with the iPhone 11 Pro Max that also gives very good results. results in this field.
I leave you the technical data and then I explain (and show you) my opinions regarding this camera.
The rear camera setup features these five lenses:
- 50 MP, f / 1.9, 23mm (wide), 1 / 1.28 ″, 2.44µm, omnidirectional PDAF, OIS
- 8 MP, f / 4.4, 240mm (periscope telephoto), PDAF, OIS, 10x optical zoom
- 8 MP, f / 2.4, 80mm (telephoto), PDAF, OIS, 3x optical zoom
- 40 MP, f / 1.8, 18mm (ultrawide), 1 / 1.54 ″, PDAF
- TOF 3D, (depth)
For its part, the front gives us these technical details:
- 32 MP, f / 2.2, 26mm (wide), 1 / 2.8 ″, 0.8µm, AF
- IR TOF 3D, (depth / biometrics sensor)
In practice, we are again faced with a superlative camera in good lighting conditions. The colors are somewhat saturated, but it allows us to capture really beautiful scenes, especially if we use HDR . Special mention to the night mode , which is still the king in the world of smartphones. I really liked (and it was my biggest surprise) that the portrait mode has improved a lot , until now it was the great handicap of Huawei photos. It no longer creates an artificial effect on the skin, the clipping is much tighter and the blur quality lives up to what you might expect. The opening modeIt allows you to play with the blur yourself, something that I usually take advantage of a lot and that I invite you to try if you have not done it yet. Finally, I can not forget its zoom , which reaches 100x and, although it vibrates a lot, it has also improved its stabilization compared to the P30 Pro.
The only downside, something that I have been asking Huawei for several months, is that we do not have Super macro mode . I am aware that most users do not use it, but I did use it for work every week and now I miss it a lot.
Here is a small gallery where you can see the behavior of the camera in different situations. In the caption you have the way in which they have been taken.

Conclusions, availability and price of the Huawei P40 Pro Plus: Huawei P40 Pro +, analysis of Huawei’s true top of the range in 2020
Its official price is 1,399 euros . You can buy it in their official online store , where they currently have a bundle on offer thanks to which you will get the Huawei Watch GT 2 as a gift , or look at the following trusted stores:
I always like to end my reviews with a section in which I tell you who I would recommend it to and who I would not. And this time it will not be an exception.
After all the above, I recommend it to those advanced mobile phone users who are looking for a true top of the range, a smartphone with an outstanding camera, a premium design, a quality screen and unrivaled connectivity. The smartphone is really nice, but also the hardware does not disappoint and is up to the task.
But considering its weak points, I do not recommend it to the most inexperienced users, since the software still has some limitations (although less and less). Of course not to those who have a much more limited budget, since it is true that the price has skyrocketed quite a bit.
But, in short, Huawei has once again shown that it knows how to do things very well and it has achieved it with this Huawei P40 Pro +, a smartphone that is worth giving a try.
