Jacob Martin complete information Domestic career

Martin made his first-class debut for Baroda in the 1991–92 season in the Rajni Trophy. In his debut match, he took 5 wickets in an innings against Gujarat and scored a 50. However, Martin came to be regarded as a specialist batsman and an occasional part-time spin bowler — to date, he has a total of 9 first-class wickets including the 5 he took on debut.

He has played for Baroda throughout his career except during the 2002-03 season when he played for Railways. He has also captained Baroda on a regular basis from the 2000-01 season onwards, winning the Rajni Trophy in 2000-01 and finishing as runners-up the following season.

Martin’s most prolific season was in 1998–99 when he scored 1037 runs for Baroda in the Rajni Trophy at an average of 103.70 including 5 centuries. The feat made him only the sixth player to have scored over 1000 runs in a Rajni Trophy season, and helped to earn him selection for the India national cricket team.

Martin made his ODI debut against the West Indies cricket team in September 1999, and also played in the subsequent triangular ODI series in Australia against Australia national cricket team and Pakistan national cricket team in January 2000. However, he was unable to reproduce his domestic form and did not play again for India after 2001.

Jacob Martin sprung into prominence after an outstanding season in 1998-99, when his 1,152 runs came at an astonishing 96 with 5 hundreds. He scored 1,037 runs in that edition of Rajni Trophy, breaking the existing record. Unfortunately, Martin never held the record, for Vijay Bharadwaj slammed 1,280 the same season. However, his 1,037 runs and 5 hundred both remain season records for Baroda. Two seasons later crossed the 1,000-mark again in the Indian domestic season.

In between all this, he played 10 ODIs, scoring 158 runs at 23 with a sub-50 strike rate, never reaching the 40-mark (though, to be fair, he played all his matches away from home). He had his moments, scoring a gritty 33 against West Indies in a low-scoring encounter, and 39 and 36 in his last two innings. Unfortunately, while his composed technique was reassuring, he never gave an indication that he was cut out for limited-overs cricket. They probably picked him for the wrong format.

In domestic cricket Martin earned a reputation as a run-glutton, amassing 9,192 runs at 47. He led Baroda to consecutive Rajni finals, in 2000-01 and 2001-02, winning the first. These were Baroda’s first appearances in the Rajni final since 1958-59. Along with Mayan Mongia, Connor Williams, and Satya it Para, Martin helped form a strong batting line-up for Baroda — one that lacked glamour but not substance.

In 2001-02 he slammed 271 against Hyderabad, thus becoming only the third from Baroda (and the first since 1957-58) to cross the 250-mark. Four seasons later he scored 251 against Uttar Pradesh. His 6,877 runs for Baroda are next to only Williams’ 7,056, while his 20 tons remain a record. He also played for Railways (who he faced in consecutive Rajni finals) for a season; and came out of retirement to play for Assam, eventually finishing with Baroda. He came into news abruptly in 2011 for being arrested for trafficking budding cricketers to the non-existent Aja Sports Club in UK in return of money. He was later released on bail. In 2016, Baroda appointed Martin as their coach.

Profile

Even though Jacob Martin did not exactly set the Yara on fire on the tour of Australia in 1999-2000, he did give enough evidence in his batting style that, if encouraged, he could be a long-term prospect. In the first place, no can question Martin’s insatiable appetite for runs. One of only half a dozen players in the history of the Rajni Trophy championship to get over 1000 runs in a season, Martin, thanks to his great deeds for Baroda during 1998-99, became a nationally known figure. He was one of those who forced their way into the Indian team by strong performances around the domestic circuit. But unlike some others who also made the grade on similar credentials, Martin showed that he was made of sterner stuff.

HIGHLIGHTS

Jacob Martin represented India in 10 ODIs from 1999 to 2001

In 2009, Martin was arrested in Delhi in connection with a 2003 human-trafficking case

The former India batsman is currently out on bail

Former India player Jacob Martin, who has a criminal history, has been appointed as Baroda Rajni team head coach. The surprise move by Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) comes at a time when Supreme Court-appointed Lodhi Panel is trying to clean up Indian cricket.

Martin, who represented India in 10 ODIs from 1999 to 2001, has a criminal record due to which he also spent time in Thira Jail in New Delhi. Martin, who is yet to be proven guilty, was arrested in 2009 in Delhi in connection with a 2003 human-trafficking case.

BCA’s move to appoint him as the head coach has stunned the side’s players and also a few officials of the state association.

“How can someone who has spent time in Thira Jail and whose case for which he was convicted, still pending be appointed as the Rajni Trophy coach? BCCI’s ‘no criminal record’ rule should also hold true for coaches and other office bearers,” said a senior player in the Baroda team was quoted as saying by Mid-day.com.

UNETHICAL

Another official termed Martin’s appointment as “bad example”.

“This is completely unethical. He may have been a very good cricketer, but he hasn’t been a law-abiding citizen. BCA has set a bad example by appointing him as coach. There are so many senior cricketers in Baroda who could easily have occupied the post,” another official said.

MARTIN MAINTAINS INNOCENCE

Currently, Martin is out on bail as “there was no concrete evidence to press charge against him.” The 44-year-old has maintained his innocence saying, “I have full faith in the law and I am sure that I will come out clean. I just want to dedicate the rest of my life to the game and nothing else.” Martin’s discharge application is pending in Delhi High Court and is expected to come up for hearing soon.
