Mathematics classes in 1st of ESO: what to do

The arrival first of the ESO is a transition for all students. These should probably be done in a new building, with new teachers, a different schedule organization, different teachers for each hour, specific rooms for certain classes, new colleagues … Everything changes!

All of these changes can take a toll on their learning to the point where they feel lost.

Even the brightest have to start somewhere.
The great mathematicians also started from scratch.

What do we find in the mathematics classes of the first year of ESO ?

When students arrive in first grade, they must have a certain foundation in algebra, arithmetic, and geometry. The math teacher will ask them to master:

  • The sum.
  • The substraction.
  • The multiplication tables.
  • The Euclidean Division .
  • Problem solving.

If the student already has certain gaps in these bases, he should begin to consider attending a school support course or receiving help from a private teacher, perhaps during the summer holidays before starting the institute. With these sessions, the student can better prepare for the high school math program.

The great novelty that this subject includes revolves around the writing. Students will begin to learn the principles of mathematical proof.

However, they may encounter many other difficulties. Starting with mental math, which some teachers love so much.

Today we do not make so much mental effort because we use the calculator built into our Smartphone . However, advancing in mental arithmetic is simpler than it may seem. It is enough to practice and learn some basic rules that help us go faster:

  • To multiply by 5, just multiply by 10 and divide by 2. For example: 44 x 10 = 440, 440/2 = 220,
  • To multiply by 11 , we start from the number we want to multiply and, between its two figures, we add the sum of both. Example: 11 x 13 = 143 because 4 = 1 + 3. Another example: 11 x 72 = 792, because 7 + 2 = 9.
  • To multiply by 9, simply multiply by 10 and subtract the multiplied number. Example: 9 x 15 = 150 – 15 = 135.

There are many other little tricks to make mental math much faster. The important thing is to practice doing exercises like this every day.

In this way you can gain some mathematical logic , which will come in handy if the calculator is forbidden in math exams.
