    Maria Montessori: a life for children

    Summarizing the life and works of Maria Montessori in a few lines is complex and could be reductive. We therefore entrusted to her, educator, pedagogist, philosopher, doctor, child neuropsychiatrist and scientist born in 1870, the arduous task of describing in a few words her idea of education, which has become a method applied all over the world:

    “All early childhood education must be informed on this principle: to help the natural development of the child”

    The love for the study characterized his whole life and studying was not easy, just think that in 1896 he became the first female doctor in Italy.

    His studies started with children with mental disabilities to whom he dedicated his whole life. From the care and observation of children, Maria Montessori came to develop an educational method that revolutionized pedagogical approaches forever.

    The Montessori method

    From his studies and observations, Montessori deduced that the little ones have different stages of growth and that they cannot be standardized on the basis of the age of the child. In these differentiated phases, the little ones show a different propensity to learn some things, leaving out others.

    This led her to develop an educational method based on the differentiation of study and learning plans, which had to be built on the real possibilities of the child, following precisely his “natural development”.

    The education of children according to the Montessori method, passes through the use of concrete tools and objects, so that memorization, for example, no longer passes from the intentional operation of reading and memorizing something, but from the experience made through games and objects to touch, manipulate and “live”.

    Montessori games and products: some examples

    The application of the method requires toys and furnishing accessories that allow the child, through concrete experience, to deeply internalize the concepts.

    Maria Montessori, in her research, has identified three types of materials:

    • self-correcting material, which makes the intervention of an adult unnecessary because thanks to the object the child senses both the error committed and the ways to correct it;
    • analytical material, which allows the child to identify a single quality of the object and helps to develop the senses separately;
    • attractive material, these are objects that can be manipulated in a way that attracts the child’s attention.
