Samsung patents a mobile with a subscreen that hides the front camera

Samsung seems to have achieved what seemed impossible hiding the front camera behind the screen itself, an ingenious device could solve a great dilemma that mobile manufacturers have encountered until now. The problem lies in getting the light to pass through the screen to reach the sensor.

The one who has been closest to achieving this has been ZTE with its ZTE Axon 20 5G model, in which a second screen is used to cover the camera lens. However, in the process resolution has had to be sacrificed and minimizes the light capture required for photographs, which these days seems like a half-baked solution.

In June 2020, the South Korean company, Samsung, applied to the WIPO World Intellectual Property Office for a patent for what they have named ‘Electronic device that includes a secondary screen and a method of operation of the same’.

The turning point that could inaugurate a new era of smartphones is in a mechanical device in which the camera does not need to leave the phone directly when shooting.

All this is possible thanks to the fact that a first screen contains a transparent area at the top and a second screen placed below it, in a module equipped with a dual camera and an LED flash. Here’s the trick, when taking a photographic capture, the subscreen would drop in sync to clear the way to the lens.

The result is a full-screen smartphone with very narrow edges and a rounded panel; in which the camera and LED flash remain invisible while not in use.

The immediate benefits of this revolutionary system are based on the quality of the images; By activating the selfie camera and lowering the subscreen, the camera can shine through the transparent area for incredible quality shots and videos.

Additionally, the first camera is designed for biometric authentication even with an iris scanner. The second camera can be used for recordings, photos and videos.

There are other applications inherent to the secondary display that are also noteworthy. In this you can show the time, battery status, notifications and the alarm.

With the patent approved since December 24, 2020, according to LetsGoDigital , we can only wait when Samsung will incorporate this technology to its phones. It also remains to be determined whether it will do it with mid-range phones or reserve it for high-end terminals.
