Tekken x Street Fighter “is dead”: Harada confirms what already seemed an open secret
Although Bandai Namco wanted to take this fighting game forward, its development never advanced too far.
A little over ten years have passed since Capcom and Bandai Namco announced in style one of the most unexpected crossovers and, since then, most desired by wrestling fans. Actually, two, since the original idea was to create Street Fighter X Tekken , which was released in 2012, and later give life to the replica of Bandai Namco; a Tekken X Street Fighter that we now know was canceled.
We wanted to show it to the public but the project diedKatsuhiro haradaFor a few weeks, the producer of Tekken has had a YouTube channel in which he interviews great personalities of the video game industry in Japan, and it has been in this particular scenario where the veteran Katsuhiro Harada has confirmed what already seemed an open secret : “we wanted to show it to the public but the project died”. He did it after completing 30% of the development of a game that in the words of the Japanese creative, looked pretty good. “Dhalsim was pretty good, unsurprisingly. The modeling of the female characters was also very good. I would have loved to teach it.”
About the development of Tekken X Street Fighter, Harada already commented years ago that what excited him the most “to see how well Bandai Namco converted 2D characters like Akuma from Street Fighter or Geese from The King of Fighters into 3D models and made them really visually appealing. I’m passionate and excited about doing it… but my logical and commercial thinking makes me wonder if we really should make it happen, “the Japanese said.
Still, he added. “I am emotionally ready for Tekken X Street Fighter and I still want to release the game.” Now we know that that passion to make a long-awaited project like this a reality was not enough. Reasons? Harada already dropped it long ago. “We started creating 3D models and I really liked them, they looked great, and the project progressed up to about 30%. However, when we were ready to move forward with the project, Capcom released Street Fighter V and we released Tekken 7. Those. titles are two of the best fighting games in history and they were very successful “
Faced with this scenario, Harada was faced with the decision to launch his game “and divide the community” or to park the project for a season of one or two years. The point is that “Tekken 7 is now working very well as a service game (…) which makes it much more difficult to justify the launch of another game, while Tekken 7 is still doing so well,” it said in mid-2019. .
