Officials said they are still working to identify about 5,600 cases of separated migrant children since 2017, but that much of the information they inherited from the Trump administration is “incomplete.”

One of Biden’s clearest campaign promises on migration was family reunification, and in February he created a task force led by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The department added that the 5,600 cases investigated belong to a series of cases not reviewed during the Donald Trump administration, thus adding to the official number of separated families since 2017.
