Community Managers Book Chapter 6: Poker Hacks

Countless references have linked the card game to business. The reality is that if these two worlds keep a beastly similarity.

You don’t need to know how to play to understand this chapter. I am not very good but it entertains me, enough to know and learn the lessons that surround the card game.

We are facing 3 typical attitudes that can appear in any poker game and in any work or productive situation in your life, even in some personal relationships. These are 3 situations that you can apply in your work as a Community Manager to achieve radical changes.

The Tilt :Community Managers Book Chapter 6: Poker Hacks

Tilt is an emotional state of frustration during which you cling to wanting to achieve a goal that you have previously failed, but you intend to keep trying, without control or reason because you feel that you are getting closer and closer to achieving it.

The grace of knowing this is that tilt can also be induced to the right in a person, for this, a state of tension must be created through strategies such as social pressure exaggerating errors or mistakes or attracting them to hold on, reducing risk and increasing the reward so you feel like you can win.

We tend to enter a state of tilt on social networks, in those moments when we let ourselves be carried away by the comments of others, but instead of acting with restraint and in a thoughtful way, we allow emotions to take control and guide our comments.

Poker players are aware that they need to develop certain psychological skills to control themselves and not fall into struggles. Next I will tell you what you must do to be stronger and not fall for these tricks:

Realize what turns you on :Community Managers Book Chapter 6: Poker Hacks

We all have sensitive themes, red buttons that make us radiate when pressed. Knowing ourselves will allow us to be attentive so that even if those buttons are pressed they have no effect.

The simple fact of knowing and knowing well what makes you angry at the beginning mitigates the effects. But it is essential not to deceive yourself and be sincere, self-condescension like “it hardly bothers me that they tell me that” is useless when in reality you know inside that it is a sensitive issue.

Practice acceptance :Community Managers Book Chapter 6: Poker Hacks

Most people tame a natural tendency to overestimate our qualities. I assure you that you know someone who says things like: “I would have split his whole. …” “Oh, you don’t know me, I was going to put him in all of his …” or any other similar expression expressing exactly the same thing: that they WOULD HAVE won .

Why do they claim that THEY WOULD HAVE PASSED? How are they sure? What makes them think that no fortuitous blow or bad luck would have made them lose? It would be unthinkable for them, it is a state of total TILT.

Normally we all do it in one context or another: we face problems with wrong expectations, thinking that we can and when something goes unfavorable we get frustrated and from there everything goes wrong.

It is better to assume that there will always be good times and bad times, that there is always the possibility of winning or losing, that we must always have a plan that considers all the variants and possibilities, you must have a containment plan for each possible result, that DOES make us invincible. , not BELIEVING just for ego that we can.

Be aware of yourself:Community Managers Book Chapter 6: Poker Hacks

We all know frustration, it is a feeling of emptiness, of disbelief. Generally we feel that losing is unfair, many of us accept it, although unconsciously we have ingrained denial.

These are mechanisms of our personality to avoid a shock. It is essential that you discover and realize what that mechanism is that your mind creates and that you detect it so that you put a stop to it, accept reality and can learn from it so that the next time you do not make a mistake or can prevent the situation That made you feel this frustrated

Put distance

Although not everyone can apply this solution it is worth a try. When you are falling into an argument, it is best to get away before the train derails.

It is convenient to adopt a psychological distance by resorting to breathing or relaxation techniques that help us to assume a more rational and detached perspective.

When you manage to control this aspect, the next step may be to provoke the adversary so that he is the one who enters the state and he is the one who sinks and you do not have to confront him.

Engaging in an argument in any way will make you look bad, even if you win the argument or appear calm. The simple fact that you have not prevented and anticipated the argument to control the situation is enough to consider that you lose.

Set an anchor

It is the most difficult, putting a mental shutdown button to quickly exit is something that must be worked a lot. The stop button consists of setting a limit in our mind, a “this far I come”, drawing a line while we are fully conscious, which protects us in case the emotional brain takes over.

You must root in your mind some action that triggers tranquility or immediate relaxation, just what happens with compulsive smokers, when something goes out of control, smoking a cigarette calms them because it triggers an oxytocin drug in their brain, this is not the effect Tobacco is the effect of the mental attribute that we give to smoking.

It is best to establish a healthy habit, such as carrying a fragrance or flavoring in your bag or eating chocolate.

Bloffing is an attitude, a strategy to achieve a goal, basically it is about looking confident and carefree about something with the mere intention of generating confidence and making an opponent doubt.

Why is the bloff important in a professional or business attitude? because it allows us to earn points and place in a negotiation, call it a job interview or closing sale.

So, for example, if someone asks you if you know how to handle an X digital tool specifically and you have never actually used it but you know that you have used several similar ones, you can bluff and look confident, say yes and that you will not have problems with it, but as far as have the slightest chance you know that it will be enough for you to take a look and voila, technically it is a lie but the difference is that it will not be when the time comes to show it, you must make sure of that, you must commit.

This way you earn points in a decisive situation since you simply look confident and radiating experience.

One step forward always

Learn to control this and you will always be one step ahead of everyone:

If you learn to separate your emotions and susceptibilities from the digital world, you will be unstoppable. Try the following: the next time you sit down to work on your social media, separate your emotional side from the analytical side.

Qualify, choose which side will respond to each situation. Remember that at the end of the day it is data on a server, we want that data to favor you, it is numbers and that you never lose sight of.

So, use people’s emotions and outbursts in your favor, never compete against it, each negative comment is scope and relevance to you, you must accept it and relax. At work you are a machine that quantifies negative and positive comments, but by the good and by talking to people you are the most empathetic person.

If you got to this point it is because you liked it, you are not fooling me. If so, I would greatly appreciate you sharing this episode of my Community Managers From Zero Book, every week I will be publishing a new chapter hoping it will be of much use to you. No more for the moment, I say goodbye.
