Lenovo Notebook Warranty: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Lenovo Notebook Warranty Up to 5 years with Lenovo ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Legion …
The l enovo warranty on its laptops is one of its great strengths, as the company usually offers a wide range of additional coverage and a very good service. That is why we wanted to do this article: so that you know everything that the Lenovo guarantee can offer, be it ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Legion or any other range. Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Of course, before starting we highlight that we do this article on our own, in no case under any sponsorship or collaboration with Lenovo. I will simply take advantage of my personal ThinkPad T480s to exemplify and clarify all the warranty options offered. Let’s go there! with Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Index of contents
What does the Lenovo laptop warranty cover (and what doesn’t)? Differences between manufacturer and store
First of all, we must make a few clarifications about how the warranty itself works. There are basically two types of warranty that a computer usually has, the one offered by the store, and the one offered by the manufacturer Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Legal guarantee of the store (until January 1, 2022)
By law, the store where we buy our laptop is fully obliged to provide us with a 2-year warranty service in the European Union, although it is assumed that in Spain there will be 3 as of January 1, 2022. This is the legal guarantee, and be careful, because it has small print. Here’s what the OCU says about it:
- During the first 6 months, you do not have to prove anything, it is assumed that the defect that appeared is there from the factory.
- After 6 months, then the store can ask the consumer to prove that the fault originally existed . This is even more complicated, since they can ask for a very expensive expert report to prove it.
Commercial guarantee offered by the store
Now, I am sure that many of you who will read this article have had to request a warranty repair from a shop after those 6 months, without being asked for any “too thorough demonstration”, much less an expert report.

This is because we have described the legal guarantee above, which is absolutely mandatory, but stores can offer better conditions without problem. This is known as a commercial guarantee Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Obviously, this is common because stores know that one dissatisfied customer can lead to the loss of another 10 customers, based on this person telling others about a bad experience. We have a view of guaranteeing a product as “whole” throughout the entire period, plus many stores offer excellent service. Why go with a store that only promises us the legal guarantee? Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Legal guarantee of the store from January 1, 2022
As we say, as of January 1, 2022, there will be a 3-year legal guarantee in Spain (not in the rest of the European Union). But what about that 6-month period? The new Law extends it to 2 years.
In other words, we are basically going to enjoy a 2-year warranty “without proving anything” and an additional one, having to prove that the defect that appears is from the factory. So in practice it may come closer to the commercial assurance of the stores that we all take advantage of Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Manufacturer’s commercial warranty, where Lenovo has the upper hand
As we saw before, a commercial guarantee is offered completely optional, and those who offer the legal guarantee are the stores. So that a manufacturer provides guarantees directly to its customers is something that is not mandatory at all, but it is just another commercial guarantee.
In fact, you have to be very careful not to find a manufacturer that claims to offer a guarantee but only does it to distributors and wholesalers, come on, consumers are left out.
In Lenovo’s case, they offer a pretty good commercial warranty on all of their laptops, with periods between 1 and 5 years.
As we know that all this may have been a bit complicated, we are going to make a brief summary of what we can achieve with the different types of guarantee.
Legal guarantee | Store commercial guarantee | Manufacturer’s commercial warranty | Lenovo Commercial Warranty | |
You have to contact … | Shop | Shop | Maker | Lenovo |
Is it mandatory? | YES, to any purchase from an EU store | NO, they do not have to offer it. | NO. Be careful, because sometimes it seems that | No. All laptops include it. |
Period | 2 years (proof of origin failure from 6 months).
As of 1/1/2022: 3 years (proof of origin fault from 2 years). |
Generally 2 years. | From 1 to 10 years, or even for life depending on the product. | From 1 to 5 years, depending on extensions. |
In terms of coverage, let’s focus now almost exclusively on what the Lenovo laptop warranty gives us.
We are talking about ” technical and factory problems that may arise during the warranty period .” That is, any hardware problem that is not our fault, such as a component suddenly stopping working. When this happens, parts and labor are covered. Lenovo Notebook Warranty
And what does it not cover? Obviously, everything that we cause, be they accidental or incidental problems , such as a fall, a spill or a power surge. Easy right? Well now let’s see what guarantee they give us by default.
What standard warranty period does a Lenovo ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Legion… notebook offer?
The standard warranty service, which as we have seen above covers parts and labor free of charge for any hardware failure not caused by us, is offered with several possible periods. As it is a commercial guarantee offered by the manufacturer , they are not even obliged to give it, and that is why some models have only one year.
Specifically, these are the periods that Lenovo offers by default in all the series of its 6 brands:
- ThinkPad
- X1: 3 years.
- X: 3 years.
- T: 3 years.
- Q: 3 years.
- E: 1 year.
- L: 1 year.
- ThinkPad Yoga: 3 years.
- ThinkBook: 1 year.
- IdeaPad: 2 years.
- Yoga: 2 years.
- Legion: 2 years.
Be careful, because this may vary depending on the specific model, or with the arrival of future Lenovo laptops this policy could change. We hope, even so, that it is a good reference.
Warranty extension, the great strength of any Lenovo equipment
One of the great features of the Lenovo laptop warranty is the ability to improve the service offered, with several different types of support. That is, if we pay more we can choose a better quality support, and even extend the warranty period.
Warranty extensions are something to keep in mind if you buy a laptop where Lenovo only offers 1 year by default.
It’s not a matter of Lenovo offering too basic a free warranty and you have to pay to get decent service. Rather, they offer a decent service in and of themselves, but if we pay more we will receive quite a few advantages.
All these extension options are given when buying a laptop on the official website, but can also be obtained after purchase. We will discuss how later.
Warranty extension for IdeaPad, Legion laptops, etc.
As we have seen, all these laptops offer a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty, but the extension possibilities vary according to the range. Specific:
- Legion and Yoga: can be extended to 3 years or 4 years.
- IdeaPad: can only be extended to 3 years .
The standard warranty service is called escrow support, and in addition to all of the above, it includes round-trip shipping to Lenovo warehouses, which is where your computer will be promptly shipped to a repair center.
Well, in addition to the standard escrow service, Lenovo also offers the Premium Care service, which includes a few additional capabilities.
- Dedicated phone support from Lenovo experts, skipping the queue and fast response. All this including software assistance, that is, they will help us if we have a software problem on the computer, or with the peripherals used.
- On-site repairs the next business day. This is an incredible advantage, which greatly revalues the service, since we will not have to send it, but they will come to our home to fix it.
- Checking the annual status of the computer. Every year Lenovo will detect potential problems with your computer, although we do not know what exactly they refer to.
And how much does it cost to make these updates? It all depends on each laptop, but roughly it is usually like this:
- 3 years with deposit: 40 euros.
- 4 years with deposit: 70 euros.
- 2 years Premium Care: 60 euros.
- 3 years Premium Care: 85 euros.
- 4 years Premium Care: 240 euros.
Be careful, some models do not allow you to choose 4 years of Premium Care. We do not know if it could go from 3 years Premium Care to 4 years with a deposit .
We say this because Premium Care seems like an excellent option, or at least with a much better price-performance ratio than the deposit service. We will expand more on the on-site warranty in the next section.
Warranty extension for ThinkPad, Crown Jewel, and ThinkBook laptops
This is the series of business equipment of the company, where the trust of users prevails in its robustness, hence Lenovo offers quite good warranty extensions. Let’s look at the 3 types offered here.
Deposit support
As in the case of the other ranges, the guarantee that is offered by default in most of the equipment is the deposit support, which consists of sending the laptop to Lenovo warehouses, which will redirect our laptop to a repair center authorized. All this completely free of charge, without having to pay a penny for shipping.
As for the problems that we may have that (in principle) do not require sending the laptop to the Lenovo warehouse, they will offer us basic hardware support, not software.
On-site support
We turn to one of the most interesting services that Lenovo offers in their laptops, as it brings great value over the warranty service. We are talking about on- site support: instead of sending the equipment to be repaired, a Lenovo technician will come to our home and make the repair that is necessary at the moment , without having to send it to any external point and reducing waiting times. Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Be careful, because obviously not in all cases an on-site repair will be possible, depending on the magnitude of the problem. But in almost all occasions it will be possible to solve this way.
Premium on-site support
Premium on-site support is added to the on-site support service, with which we can get an even more advanced support service. When it comes to on-site service, the key is that you ‘ll get priority, skip-the-line access for repairs within one business day.
Come on, you can repair a hardware problem on your laptop quickly. For example: Has the TrackPad stopped working for you? The next day you will have another one, quickly installed in your house.
But this is not all, but Lenovo also adds improved technical support, which this time does include any software problems, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Prices and terms
The prices and terms of the warranty extension for a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop depend on the specific device. The cheapest ThinkPads start with a warranty of only one year, with the most common 3 years of normal warranty on the T series.
Then some teams have 3 years of on-site support by default.
In all these cases, there are big differences between the extension possibilities offered, in addition to the price of each extension. Let’s see.

Services offered in addition to the Lenovo laptop warranty
In addition to the warranty extensions, when buying a laptop Lenovo offers us several additional services that may be of great interest to users. Let’s take a look at what they are, how much they cost, and which Lenovo laptops offer them.
Protection against accidental damage
This service, as its name suggests, guarantees the repair of our device in the event of “ drops, spills, shocks, surges and other accidents not covered by the standard or extended warranty”.
Thus, Lenovo protects us from breakage of the motherboard, screen, keyboard, hard drives, etc … This protection is complete for any of the cases just mentioned, including damage to the LCD screen. In addition, they offer us multiple repairs, which are also carried out by Lenovo itself, or if the laptop ends up in “disaster” they offer a single replacement with the service.
Here are some examples of “everyday” problems covered by this warranty:
- Your PC accidentally drops and you end up damaging the screen.
- A power surge causes significant damage to your PC, for example in a storm.
- Liquid spills on your laptop, and there is some kind of damage or the extent to which you have damaged it is unknown.
But beware, because there are also assumptions that are not covered:
- There is cosmetic damage to the laptop case, but the equipment works perfectly.
- You lose your equipment or it is stolen.
- You use the PC in the rain.
Keep in mind that all this is offered at a fairly reasonable price, because if we look at it in a ThinkPad P configuration of almost € 10,000 we see that the insurance only costs € 140 and is offered for 3 years.
Replacing the sealed battery
In all laptops that do not have a removable battery, which is any of the most recent, it should be noted that only a 1-year warranty is offered. Lenovo gives the possibility of up to 3 years of guarantee with this extension, with a cost that is usually around 30 euros, and guarantees to replace the battery if it does not reach minimum levels of performance Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Drive retention
This service is important only for companies, since it allows you to retain the disk drive , be it SSD or HDD, in case of failure. Thus, in the event of a repair, we can recover the SSD / HDD in order to avoid any type of civil liability for the loss or security of the data.
Its price is usually 30-50 euros.
Smart Performance
In this case Lenovo offers us software to optimize our device, achieving according to them “adjust computer performance, increase Internet performance, eliminate malware and proactively solve problems”. Around 30 euros.
We have NOT tested this software, and we do not know if it works, considering that we are charged a relatively high price for it. With the number of free options on the market, such a price doesn’t justify any software that isn’t extraordinarily good.
Some Frequently Asked Questions About Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Let’s see, before continuing, some specific questions that can be asked when analyzing the warranty of Lenovo laptops.
Can I extend the warranty if I have bought it in another store? What if I already have the laptop?
If possible!
This is surely one of the most frequently asked questions about Lenovo’s warranty. And it is that everything we have taught corresponds to purchases made on their official website, where they give us the options of warranty extension at the moment.
The truth is that, whether you have bought in an official store or in any other, your Lenovo laptop includes the possibility of extending the manufacturer’s warranty, as long as it has not expired. That is, if you have a 2-year warranty, you can contract an extension on the official Lenovo website.
You may not be able to contract the additional services that we have discussed, but the warranty can almost always be extended. We will show you how to do it right away.
What will happen to the 2-year warranty now that it is extended to 3 in Spain?
Since the law only affects the statutory warranty, surely nothing changes in the commercial warranty offered by Lenovo.
Is it really worth paying for more warranty?

It is something that depends on many factors, and where there are many possible cases. Let’s go through a few:
- You have bought a fairly cheap laptop or plan to use it for only a few years – it may not be necessary.
- The laptop is second-hand and you find a possibility of expansion – here is a great idea. It is my personal case with the ThinkPad T480s, since the Lenovo warranty works by serial number, not by invoice. Buying a couple of more years (if possible) you get a device that is equivalent to a new laptop in terms of coverage.
- It is expensive equipment and you want to protect your investment in the long term: it is also a great idea to extend the warranty here, due to the great protection offered, and if you are going to move the laptop a lot or are not careful to hire accidental damage protection.
In addition, the fact that the Premium support service or the extensions of one more year are quite cheap encourages you to buy them. Of course, paying 200 or 400 euros is to think about it, but 20 or 40 is another story.
Case study: how to extend warranty from a ThinkPad or any Lenovo laptop
Let’s now see how to check the warranty on a Lenovo laptop and see if we have a chance to extend it, using my ThinkPad T480s.
First, we must enter the serial number of our equipment on the Lenovo warranty website , but alternatively we can request that our device be detected fully automatically, with Lenovo Service Bridge.
So, here we can see in what state the warranty of our laptop is. We see, in this case, how we are covered until April 2023 with on-site service, something that is very clear thanks to the excellent presentation of the Lenovo website.
In addition, we have a wonderful summary of the coverage that we can opt for with the different options and services.
What we are interested in here is the part of updating the warranty. If we give it, we see all the possibilities of extension, both in terms of services and period. Easy!
Note that you can also use Lenovo Vantage software to check your remaining Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Warranty processing process on Lenovo laptops
We now turn to a point in the article that is undoubtedly key: have you determined that you have a problem that must be repaired by Lenovo service ? Let’s see how to take advantage of this guarantee, because it is useless if it is so extensive if we do not know how to process it. Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Let’s start from the fact that we have entered the guarantee website that we have linked to before, already with our duly identified device.
Now, in the menu on the left, enter Contact Us, and the key point for the guarantee is to enter Send service request. This is the gateway to the processing form from which you will contact us to send the device.
We must indicate, on the large form, what happens to the team in as much detail as possible. Above, what we will indicate will be the external case number if we already had one open in relation to the problem (if we had contacted Lenovo previously). If not, we leave it empty. Also, whenever possible we should upload a code from the Lenovo Diagnostics software.
Then, we go on to fill in our contact information, to finish with the shipping information.
And what happens thereafter? We take advantage of information from a real case:
In a first email, they will attach the necessary instructions for shipping the machine, which will end up in the Lenovo warehouses and then be distributed to the corresponding repair center. After the repair, we will receive another email confirming that the laptop is on its way to be returned to us, along with the details of the repair carried out.
Obviously, if we enjoyed an In Situ or Premium service, the experience would be different, but the way to request the guarantee is equivalent.
Final words and conclusion on Lenovo Notebook Warranty
Lenovo is one of the companies that offers a more interesting guarantee service on the market, since in any Lenovo laptop we can enjoy a commercial manufacturer’s guarantee that, in addition to being sometimes very long and with large coverage, is shown to the user of very transparent way.
And we can know what warranty our Lenovo laptop has just by entering a website, as we have seen in the previous section. And of course, it is not limited to this, but we also have excellent extension possibilities, both in terms of coverage and periods:
- By default, Lenovo offers 1-3 year warranties , depending on the laptop. This period can be extended, although there are some exceptions, but we can get a 5-year guarantee, which is claimed by serial number, without the need for invoices.
- Also, your default service includes all shipping costs. But they also offer on-site warranty services, where they will repair the equipment at our address or location, without having to send it anywhere.

As if that were not enough, these extensions can be purchased after having the laptop. For example, my ThinkPad T480s has been in use for just over 2 years, and has a default warranty of 3 that has been extended to 4, with on-site service. Even at this point I can extend it to 5 years!
They also offer us quite interesting additional services, among which the protection against accidental damage stands out , which unfortunately is not available on all models.
Recall that this is offered in the warranty of laptops ThinkPad, Legion, Ideapad, ThinkBook, Yoga … Come on, basically all Lenovo brands. We hope this article has been helpful to you in learning about everything Lenovo has to offer! Lenovo Notebook Warranty
