During your studies in Spain, you can apply to go abroad to become a conversation assistant and teach Spanish as a foreign language to foreign students.
This opportunity, without being reserved exclusively for future professors, is highly recommended for students of masters in teaching, philology or translation.
A Spanish assistant is part of the teaching staff and his mission is to help the Spanish teacher with his students in one or more centers.
Your weekly working hours vary from country to country and you are never alone in front of an entire class. However, you can be with a small group of students for a workshop.
A Spanish conversation aide leaves between a semester and a school year. This experience provides a genuine complement to the language to advance students in listening and speaking, but it can also put their knowledge of the language at the service of students’ written comprehension and written expression.
Spanish will be the mother tongue of the auxiliary. Depending on the needs of the school, it may be necessary for you to participate in an intensive Spanish course, in the preparation of a DELE qualification or in the implementation of a language exchange program.
Every year, almost 1,000 places are offered in more than 15 countries around the world: Germany, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Malta, Sweden …
The application is done entirely online at the beginning of the year. Requirements include having recently completed a master’s degree / studies, being a Spanish national and having knowledge of pedagogy. Also, most countries require students to have a B1 level in the language of the destination country.
The auxiliary contract lasts up to one academic year, but can be renewed in certain countries as long as the institution makes the specific request. Study ELE: be a Spanish conversation assistant abroad
