Essential sewing tools
A sewing box is made up of many essential instruments , without which you cannot work. It’s a bit like the carpenter, bricklayer, or electrician’s toolbox …
To carry out your manual activities, you must have:
- Tools to measure,
- Tools for marking the fabric,
- Tools for cutting,
- Tools to fix fabrics,
- Tools for sewing.
A sewing machine, thread and a piece of fabric are not enough: you need material to trace, utensils to unsew and fix the fabrics, a thread cutter, material to sew by hand …
We start with something mandatory: the tape measure, essential for taking measurements (height, size, fabric size, etc.).
Other elements will also be useful to take measurements:
- The ruler, to measure small distances flat and without wrinkles,
- The Japanese ruler, to draw parallel lines equidistant from each other,
- Sewing gauge, to set seam allowances before pinning fabric.
On the other hand, it is also important to mark the fabric, for which the marker pen and tailor’s chalk are used. The former allows precision work, while the latter is used to mark the contours of sewing patterns. Use a white marker on dark fabric and tailor’s chalk on light fabrics.
Once you have measured and marked the fabric, you need to cut the correct dimensions, using sewing scissors. It is recommended to always work with new scissors. In addition, you should avoid using them for another purpose (cooking, DIY, gardening, etc.).
To cut sewing thread or very fine fabrics, smaller scissors are used to notch and zigzag the fabrics.
That’s all? Well no! Here are some other very useful tools:
- A ripper, to unstitch a poorly made stitch,
- Safety pins to fix two fabrics or a seam allowance before sewing,
- Sewing needles,
- A thimble, ideal for pushing the needle to hurt your thumb,
- Sewing thread spools,
- Quills,
- Utensils to decorate: ribbons, bindings, lace, labels,
- For the finishes: sewing buttons, wooden buttons, snaps, eyelets, velcro tape, etc.
