How easy is it to learn to sew?
When we start learning sewing, it is legitimate to think that it is difficult. Especially if you have friends who have been launched and who make magnificent pieces.
But in fact, learning to sew is not that difficult . The important thing is to go step by step.
Have a good sewing machine
If you’re not sure that sewing is made for you, don’t worry, you can always sell your sewing machine, but don’t skimp on quality. A good sewing machine costs a minimum of € 150 . For less, you won’t even sew properly.
Opt for a manual at first, to be sure you know what you are doing. You don’t need to argue at the beginning. Be content with a simple sewing machine.
And learn how to use it! It may seem obvious, but once alone in front of your machine, it can be intimidating at first. Read the instructions well and do not hesitate to ask the seller and / or your friends and family for advice on its use .
Have quality sewing material
In addition to the sewing machine, you have to invest in a sewing box and fill it with quality products:
- Thread: Gütermann, Coat, DMC …
- Needles : of different gauges, to be changed according to the thickness of the fabric,
- Sewing scissors : one pair for paper and one for tissue,
- A white pencil : to mark your references,
- Pins : many,
- A tape measure : to take measurements
- A graduation rule : to add margins, mark the hem …
- An iron : indispensable between the stages of sewing.
Know how to use a pattern
Finally, the sewing machine only accounts for 20% of the time spent on sewing. What do we do with the 80% of the time left? We prepare everything:
- We copy the pattern,
- We cut it,
- We trace it on the fabric,
- We cut it,
- We take it with pins,
- We baste …
Tip : As a beginner, these stages can seem tiring. Make it easier for yourself with patterns that already have seam allowances included.
Choose ready-made patterns at the beginning. You will find in sewing magazines such as Sewing or Patterns . The explanations are well detailed, allowing you to easily learn how to trace, baste, embroider or overcast.

Start with simple clothes
I know, you’d like to jump right into making pretty ruffled dresses or pleated tops, but to avoid getting discouraged, you’d better start with cushion covers, trims, handkerchiefs or by sewing a simple purse, tote bag, or making easy dress.
