Painting museums of the world
Impressionist paintings take us back to the romantic life of the 19th century and immerse us in a unique atmosphere.

There are many artistic currents represented among the works of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. However, the Impressionists undoubtedly take the cake in the paintings that are preserved. Among the Impressionist painters, the following stand out: Gauguin, Cézanne, Pissarro, Maurice Denis or Claude Monet, so many great names in the history of art!

The Romans of the Decline by Thomas Couture

The painting The Romans of Decline is an 1847 painting by Thomas Couture, considered a masterpiece of academic art . It symbolizes the artistic trend in vogue during the second half of the 19th century, based on ancient themes and fulfilling the well-regarded technical criteria of the time.

The painting represents the Romans celebrating, but without energy or drunks. It is also the scene of an orgy, symbol of the lust of the Romans at that time. In fact, what Couture wanted was to denounce the decline of the French in his own time.

As such, the painting was condemned by Napoleon III , believing it to be too violent a critique of the society of the time. However, you can see it at the Musée d’Orsay and you won’t be condemned for it.
