The open seam method is  generally  used when the fabrics used for sewing are very thick.  It is then a matter of  separating the two leftovers on each side by ironing them firmly with an iron.  In this way, the two pleats are each on one side and not overlapping, which makes it possible to no longer see the seam, which could look too thick from the outside.

To do an open seam, you must first juxtapose the two fronts of the fabrics and then fix them so that they do not move. Then, using a sewing machine or by hand, you should sew one centimetre from the edge of the two fabrics.

Once the sewing is finished, it only remains to fold each excess on the corresponding fabric and iron both sides. In this way, the leftovers will take the fold and will not move.

This technique is widely used for sewing pants, skirts or jackets. On the contrary, the closed seam is  used for all fine creations, such as shirts, blouses or lingerie.

The main difference between the two types of seam is that in the closed (or quilted) seam the two ends of the excess are folded to the same side. You don’t have to separate them, as the fabrics are thin and there is no need to divide them. You can also use the serge to join the two ends of the seam so that they do not separate.

You can start your creation using the closed seam method and then, if it is too thick, switch to the open seam.

Both techniques are very easy to learn and you can practice at home on your own. However, if you prefer to be accompanied, you can participate in sewing workshops organized by haberdasheries or ask for help from a private sewing teacher.
